As always, the backstory doesn’t make sense. Medically discharged? So that’s an honorable discharge and he’s eligible for VA benefits. And what about the GI bill? A veteran, who served honorably (oh, how apropos for Memorial Day!) shouldn’t need to be “working hard at working hard.” A veteran has some options.
