Evidently one’s full coverage insurance won’t really replace the car but instead pay off the loan. Apparently he’s no longer able to get financing on another car, perhaps because he doesn’t have a job? Too, he might have been upside down where the insurance settlement was for the fair market value of the car which was less than he owed on the loan.
