The pseudo-Mohawk thing looks strange to me too… for now. Maybe it will disappear, maybe it will be embraced by the “herd” as you call it, in which case my feelings may change. For many of us the question of what looks good is mainly a matter of social convention (after symmetry, at least), and while there are a lot of places where individuality has clear benefits I’ve never really understood the distaste some of you have for fashion trends.

I’m saying that it may simply look strange to me because it hasn’t been prevalent enough in my experience to seem normal yet. It could be like the top knot thing that’s starting to pop up, which I’m convinced will always look dumb, but it might also be like a lot of trends (not just in hair) from the 80’s and 90’s that look patently ridiculous now but seemed like a good idea at the time, or those from the 00’s that are starting to seem wierd. If you just don’t care for one trend or another that’s one thing (I mostly like facial hair but can’t get behind the huge puffy hipster beards, for example), but when people seem to dislike trends specifically because they’re trendy, that puzzles me.

Is it a gimmicky fad that classic styles in America are different from the classic styles in India, for example? From what I can tell it boils down to the same basic thing – people tend to dress and groom themselves in the way they see other people doing it. I mean I’ve never been one to obsess over looking sexy or cool, or carefully follow the latest trends, but when I go to get a haircut or buy new clothes I go for what looks good to me. It just happens that what I think looks good is heavily influenced by what I see around me on a daily basis, and I don’t see what’s wrong with that.

If you’re in your seventies I guess it makes sense that you’d care less for current trends (though that could be just as heavily influenced by social convention?). In any case I’m not trying to pick a fight here, I’m just stuck on an overnight shift with nothing to do and it seems like a topic worth exploring. At least you aren’t one of the hipster types who carefully avoid doing anything trendy and think they’re being individualistic, when really they’re just being contrary.

I liked 80s and 90s trends because (1) The clothes really showed off torsos and asses, and (2) The natural-looking longer hair (not talking about the laughable mullets, but rather the more restrained stuff) softened features creating what is to me an appealing masculinity with just a touch of androgyny (which beards definitely do not fit in with). Fortunately, many young guys — more so straight than gay — still look a lot like that, especially the hair. And that includes many big-name actors and models. Interestingly, it usually seemed to be the best-looking guys who knew not to go over-the-top with mullets, etc., just like the hottest guys today know not to go over-the-top with tatts…just a few strategically placed ones which can actually add a hot accent. (Tony Danza, pictured below with his bountiful tightly-encased buns circa 1980, had a tatt on one bicep.)
