When is the age you would suggest we should allow adults to be responsible for their decisions? I’m asking in a non-confrontational way because I am actually interested in your opinion–should we move the age of majority? 21 maybe?

The lifespan has extended itself significantly over the last few generations, so maybe 18 is not as relevant as it once was. I tend to think 18 is actually an existing buffer, 16 years of age is where I think many people are self sufficient on their own devices if need be, but the additional two years are present for the outliers who may be a bit behind in development.

It really is a great topic for discussion, and it’s something that the studios have to be mindful of. When that clock strikes midnight and you turn 18 (or when the clock hits whatever time you were born) you don’t suddenly gain great decision making abilities. Your outward appearance doesn’t change either. Eighteen isn’t the same for everyone, and I think that’s why the studios have to assess each model on a case by case basis. If the kid just turned eighteen, and he’s still in high school, it might be better to hold off until school is over. Whomever is conducting the interviews should be able to get a fairly good judge of why this guy wants to do vids. The responsible thing would be to make sure they know the pros and cons, and weigh them accordingly. Too many young people get lured in by the prospect of fast, easy money, and they don’t think about the consequences. Most studios probably don’t want to risk turning a model away and seeing him end up somewhere else, so I’m sure many of them don’t go into the whole porn overview.

With a studio like CF, they’re sort of in a Catch-22. Their whole business model is built around collegiate models. If they move their applicant age up, then that’s less mileage they can get out of potential stars (although we all know that age requirement isn’t as strict as it used to be). The Clay situation probably would’ve happened no matter how old he was when he started. I imagine he was one of the ones who was still figuring things out, and having all that put under a microscope by people in his hometown helped initiate a tragic event.

I work with young models regularly and I agree that their maturity levels vary significantly, but I could say the same with my thirtsomething models who regularly make poor decisions. At some point we have to let people be adults.

I think by 15/16 people are really incapable of being told what to do intellectually and are simply open to coaching. If an 18 year old person ignores universal societal norms and makes a decision they later regret, we all have, you can’t really be protected from that and it is not societies responsibility to do so.

I think so long as the studios are open and honest about everything, that’s all you can really ask for. But if during the application process they get a vibe that something might be a little off, it might be better to pass, or at least hold off on shooting scenes. If you’ve been doing this a while you should be able to spot most red flags when they arise. You’re right, the decision ultimately lies with the model. There are also going to be times when models look good on paper and in person, and then things take a bad turn.

The lifespan has extended itself significantly over the last few generations, so maybe 18 is not as relevant as it once was. I tend to think 18 is actually an existing buffer, 16 years of age is where I think many people are self sufficient on their own devices if need be, but the additional two years are present for the outliers who may be a bit behind in development.

It really is a great topic for discussion, and it’s something that the studios have to be mindful of. When that clock strikes midnight and you turn 18 (or when the clock hits whatever time you were born) you don’t suddenly gain great decision making abilities. Your outward appearance doesn’t change either. Eighteen isn’t the same for everyone, and I think that’s why the studios have to assess each model on a case by case basis. If the kid just turned eighteen, and he’s still in high school, it might be better to hold off until school is over. Whomever is conducting the interviews should be able to get a fairly good judge of why this guy wants to do vids. The responsible thing would be to make sure they know the pros and cons, and weigh them accordingly. Too many young people get lured in by the prospect of fast, easy money, and they don’t think about the consequences. Most studios probably don’t want to risk turning a model away and seeing him end up somewhere else, so I’m sure many of them don’t go into the whole porn overview.

With a studio like CF, they’re sort of in a Catch-22. Their whole business model is built around collegiate models. If they move their applicant age up, then that’s less mileage they can get out of potential stars (although we all know that age requirement isn’t as strict as it used to be). The Clay situation probably would’ve happened no matter how old he was when he started. I imagine he was one of the ones who was still figuring things out, and having all that put under a microscope by people in his hometown helped initiate a tragic event.
