I have to say that Takei wasn’t a “token” Asian. Just like Nichelle Nichols wasn’t a “token” black character. Gene Roddenberry fought valiantly to have his cast and guest cast be representative and diverse. In fact, the first pilot had the 1st officer as a woman, which the Network (NBC) and Desilu (who backed Roddenberry – and Lucille Ball herself, still owning Desilu then, went to the meeting and fought for Roddenberry and his concept) and Roddenberry himself almost came to blows in a meeting about the network’s chauvinism. In the end, NBC had the rights to the pilot and concept, so Desilu couldn’t take it to another studio and agreed to make the first officer a man (which put Gene Roddenberry’s original choice in Sick Bay as the ever-entertaining Nurse Chapel) in order to get a show about “people all being people regardless of color” on TV – Roddenberry’s words.

That isn’t WHY I loved Star Trek – I covered that above . But years later, when I read about all of it, I was happy to have supported the effort. You don’t spend decades in the Corps without realizing that people ARE people, regardless – it’s their actions that segregate them.

Takei lost his luster for me when he criticized the studio for making Sulu gay in the most recent movie – what a twat, but I think he may be losing it a little, so . . . As far as William Shatner, no he was definitely an Alpha top . . . but I fantasized MANY times in my youth and blasted gallons of spooge thinking about all the dirty thinks I could do to him. These days, I think he’s a hoot. The Priceline ads? Boston Legal? Awesome! Any personality who can laugh at himself and make his own caricature of himself is all right in my book.

So back to Takei. He SAID he believed that the character Sulu was supposed to be straight because of a conversation between him and Roddenberry in the summer of 1998. Takei used the conversation as logical evidence that Gene Roddenberry “intended” Sulu to be straight, but the content he related did nothing of the sort. Further the content of the conversation was supposedly specifically about more representation among the cast including gays though Takei was careful to not put himself – Takei says Rodddenberry was apologetic that he couldn’t do more because he had been pushing hard with the network as it was and would be off the air if he did more. Add to that the fact that in STTOS and the six subsequent movies the character appeared in, Sulu was entirely non-sexual, and you don’t have any convincing evidence. To be fair, there is 1 mention of a daughter and then, 27 years later that character appears in an episode of STTNG. Hardly convincing, as my husband for one of MANY proves by having a son and having been openly gay before that and at the time.

I liken Takei’s position to people who attempt to interpret the Constitution strictly as the nation’s founders created it, without taking into consideration the evolution of society. But I think it’s more about his waning claim to the character as the new movies feature the character more and leave him behind. And Takei, as a gay man and LGBT activist should be thrilled that we’re representing instead of attention-whoring and laying claim to the exclusive arbitration of the definition of a character he played for three years and then reprised in a secondary role in 6 movies.
