If you’re interested in the history of gay cinema, you should absolutely watch The Celluloid Closet. It got Emmy nominations but no Oscar nom despite having box office receipts. I wasn’t following the Oscars back then, so I don’t know why it got one and not the other when films can qualify for both. (The OJ Simpson documentary won both an Oscar and an Emmy, but that is unusual and probably won’t happen again now that the theater industry feels more threatened by television.)
