I won’t guarantee you’ll like them because for one thing, CF has historically had a veneer of innocence sort of like Bel Ami, and the After Dark series tampers with that expectation. To me, that’s what’s exciting about them. It’s like, “Omg … I’m kinda scared of them right now” (in a good way!).

I would compare it to the way for years Chaosmen was, per Bryan Ockert’s fetish, trying to capture a sense that these were just straight guys fumbling with each other. And then he discovered guys like Vander or Bay, who looked like no amount of gay sex was enough for them. Even with their popularity, Bryan was always trying to keep a certain vibe in the scenes, which was decidedly not “let’s see how many loads Vander can take.” The point is that the older after dark scenes (I haven’t watched the newer ones yet) are like a gritty departure from the CF norm. To me, it’s more like what FraternityX and SketchySex should have been but never achieved. If you look at the old After Dark scenes, you’ll find me complaining about them. But I changed my tune after I saw them.

These scenes are the only time I ever, ever, ever found it acceptable for the model to break the fourth wall. I wrote extensive comments during the Johnny Rapid years about what a huge turnoff that was. It might sound like we’re of different opinions on what works and doesn’t, but everything you said about what you don’t like is true for me throughout time. That small handful of scenes just happened to be the surprise exception.

Ransome!! We do disagree there. Mind you, if I saw him on a hookup site, I would leap at the chance. But I (now foggily) remember him as someone who was a bit underwhelming sexually, like he was only doing what was asked. I was actually way more into Bryan who, given the site and his role in his scenes, was surely a man after my own heart in terms of fetishizing bareback fucks and especially, I’m guessing, the spur of the moment spit fuck. Maybe I’m extrapolating everything from that one early director’s cut scene (forgetting the model’s name, but I’ll look it up later) where it honestly did look like they were only intending to shoot a solo and the model sensed correctly that Bryan wanted to rawdog his hole and took a “down for whatever” attitude. But tell me I’m wrong! What’s your favorite Ransome scene?
